Juneteenth represents freedom and serves as a reminder to African-Americans to celebrate all that our culture has achieved and represents. We all recognize the significance of the Emancipation of black slaves. It was June 19, 1865 when the announcement was made that tens of thousands of African-Americans in Texas had been emancipated, closing the door on one of the last chapters of slavery in the United States. That's how we came to know the day as Juneteenth.
As we plan for this year's celebration, let's also plan to recognize how far our community has come over the years and celebrate our black owned businesses that are serving as an example of black entrepreneurship and black excellence.
